Connecting via Skype, my friend and colleague shares his heart-wrenching story of leaving Syria in order to delay mandatory military service, only to find out days later of the loss of his younger brother, a casualty of the nascent civil war. Without looking back or even returning to mourn, Nawar began volunteering to serve the refugees from his own country who found themselves in Iraqi refugee camps. In this episode, he also tells what it was like to travel through Europe in the days immediately following the Belgium bombings. With great compassion for those rattled by his Middle Eastern appearance, Nawar went to great lengths to put strangers at ease on the subway as he crossed the streets of Germany.
